A memorable moment

St. Hubert School · Fall 2025 Overture Games

I want to take a moment to share one story from this class that stood out to me while reading through the instructor reflections this fall.

It was a day when the energy in the room was high before the lesson even began. Alex wrote about walking into a class that felt restless and loud, the kind of energy that makes it hard to move forward without a reset.

Instead of forcing the plan, he paused.

He described putting on We Will Rock You and bringing the class together without screens. Students stomped and clapped along, matching the beat as a group. In his notes, he wrote simply that they “did great following along,” but it was clear that something shifted in that moment.

From there, the class moved into the games. Once students had their iPads in front of them, focus followed.

Once we got into iPad activities, kids settled down,” Alex wrote. “We got through all activities fairly successfully.

Later in the class, Alex made a deal with the group. If they stayed focused and finished what they needed to finish, they would end with something special. He had brought a snare drum with him.

The secret to today was I brought in a snare drum,” he wrote. The students worked through the lesson, earned the moment, and took turns playing it at the end.

Then came the part that stayed with me.

As class wrapped up, someone hilariously put on the Captain Underpants theme song. Without any prompting, the room started singing together.

Alex ended that reflection with a short line: “You know what? It’s a win.” That’s awesome lol.

Reading it later, that line mattered. It captured what we aim for in these programs. Not every class is going to be perfect. We don’t aim for perfection. We aim for a shared moment where music brings a group together and the room finally feels like it’s moving in the same direction.

In this story it happened to be Captain Underpants!
